15 pounds of iodide-impregnated activated carbon is at the heart of the Healthmate air purifier.  Carbon has been used for hundreds of years to remove odors, chemicals, and gases from the air.  Unlike other units on the market, Austin Air uses enough carbon to be effective and to provide a lengthly filter life.  In fact, the Healthmate filter has a five year warranty!

 

In addition to this large carbon filter, the Healthmate features a total for four progressive filtration stages arranged in a 360 degree intake system.  This intake system draws air from all four sides of the unit, providing an increased flow rate through the unit that is less Dependant on position within your environment.  Also, you may direct the exiting air flow, which allows you to direct clean air to a specific area (where you sleep, sit, etc).
