The Austin Air Pet Machine is quiet enough for bedroom or living room use.  The unit is extremely quiet at low settings, and produces a soft "white noise" at the higher levels.

 

This unit achieves it's exceptional performance by pulling in air from all directions through and passing it through four stages, including prefilters, a 15 pound activated carbon and zeolite filter, and a medical-grade 60 square foot HEPA filter.  To extend filter life, the first pre-filter traps large particles and may be vacuumed from the outside of the unit.  Austin Air is so confident in their filters that they warranty them for 5 years.  No changing filters every few months like on competing units.

 

In addition to the filtration described above, the Pet Machine draws in air through it's 360 degree intake system.  This intake system draws air from all four sides of the unit, providing an increased flow rate through the unit that is less dependent on position within your environment.  Also, you may direct the exiting air flow, which allows you to direct clean air to a specific area (where you sleep, sit, etc).
