Steve, founder of Better Health Innovations, found the SteriPEN because of a trip he took out of the country. After spending a day in the hospital and over a week recovering from the effects (we'll hold the details) of bad drinking water, he sought out an effective solution that would prevent it from happening again. As a frequent traveler, he needed an effective, portable, light weight water purification system. The SteriPEN fit his criteria perfectly. Now he uses it virtually every time he travels and all the time when camping with the family.

The SteriPEN is the only patented, handheld water purifier that uses ultraviolet (UV) light to destroy waterborne microbes. Ultra-violet light has been used for 90 years in large-scale systems including hospitals, city water systems and bottling plants.

Microbiological testing has been conducted at the University of Arizona, the University of Maine, the Oregon Health Sciences University and at Hydro-Photon. To date SteriPEN has been tested against: E. coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, Poliovirus, Rotavirus, Klebsiella terrigena, Streptococcus faecalis, Bacillus subtilis (vegitative and spore), common yeast, Coliphage MS2, Giardia and Cryptosporidum. Testing shows that SteriPEN meets the standard as set forth in the U.S. EPA Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers. SteriPEN has been shown to destroy in excess of 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99% of viruses and 99.9% protozoa.

SteriPEN is versatile and easy to pack - carry it in your back pack, suitcase, purse or briefcase it's like carrying hundreds of gallons of purified water with you wherever you go - and it can be used in a variety of containers. Whether you are traveling overseas or going on a backwoods hike, at 8 ounces, carrying the SteriPEN is no trouble at all.

SteriPEN uses 4 AA batteries. Lithium disposables work well in most situations (Keep in jacket pocket in very cold weather). Using SteriPEN with rechargeable batteries like NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride), it is the most economical portable water purifier at 10 cents per gallon.

I do a lot of hiking, and this is so much easier to use than the pump filter I had before.  I've been able to use it a few times, and I am very impressed with how quick and convienient it its.  This is a very well designed and thought out piece of gear.

Best option for treating your water December 15, 2006

I take at least two hiking trips every year, and I've tried a lot of differernt water treatment methods.

I've found the steripen to be the easiest and most convienent way to get drinking water.  Its small, lightweight, and foolproof.  Just put the water into the container, insert the steripen and push the button.  It takes 90 seconds and your done.  All the bad stuff is killed by the UV.

The water treatment pumps are a joke compared to the steripen.  this is much easier to pack and use.  I've never liked the chemical treatments for a lot of reasons.
